Seamless clothing is becoming more and more popular among leading brands primarily in sportswear and underwear.
Seamless is a relatively new and very advanced method of clothing manufacturing.
Here we will give you a guide on what seamless manufacturing is and how it differs to your standard garment manufacturing.
What is seamless manufacturing?
Seamless manufacturing uses computer programmed knitting machines to turn fabric yarn in to near completed garments.
This results in a garment with no side seams and very minimal stitching is needed to finish the manufacturing of the garment.
Frequent fabric compositions in seamless manufacturing include nylon, polyester, elastane and cotton.
With less seams, this offers more comfort and seamless garments generally better sculpt to your body.
Customisation on seamless manufacturing?
As well as your regular printing and embroidery on the panels,
seamless wear gives you the option of implementing patterns into the yarn to create different aesthetic effects on the garment.
This can give a seamless wear a really detailed look without being in your face in terms of branding.
Patterns can be added visual enhancements and can be added to emphasize certain body parts on garments like Gymwear.
What garments are made seamlessly?
Seamless manufacturing is popular in many sectors such as;
- Underwear
- Shapewear
- Gym t-shirts
- Gym Leggings
- Gym Shorts
- Tights
- Pyjama/Lounge t-shirts
- Bodysuits
Why has seamless wear become so popular?
Although the first seamless garments were brought to the market in 1992,
seamless wear has really become popular over the last half a decade due to leading gym brands such as Nike,
Under armour and Gymshark moving heavily in to the market as well as shape wear brands such as Skims.
Due to the premium feel and comfort of these garments, they have become incredibly popular.
Advantages of manufacturing seamless garments
- Fit & Feel: Seamless garments tend to have a premium feel to them as well as more sculpted fits due to the reduction of seams.
- Less risk of defects due to less manual workmanship needed to make the garments.
- Faster lead times due to less manual workmanship needed to make the garments.
- More options to customise the garment than using stock fabrics to make garments.
- Improved comfort of your garments due to less seams to rub against you.
- Reduced waste reduction as the panels do not need to be cut so no fabric is wasted.
Disadvantages of manufacturing seamless garments
- Minimum order quantity: Many seamless manufacturers require MOQ’s of 500-1000 per style/colour, making this less accessible for smaller brands.
- Any fault during knitting will effect the whole garment as you will not be able to replace a panel.
- Seamless wear can often be more expensive than non seamless wear. The machinery is expensive and the factories will need to account for this in the garment pricing.
